The Princes Trust

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have teamed up with The Prince’s Trust and Barnsley College to deliver their first Team programme. The programme is a 12 week personal development course for disadvantaged 16-25 year olds, offering work experience, qualifications, practical skills, community projects and a residential week. Throughout the Team programme, young people will experience a sense of achievement which inspires them to move forward with new confidence and ambition.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue contacted ALcontrol to see if we would be able to host the team as part of their ‘Next Steps’ unit - a week designed to get them thinking about life after the course and planning for the future. We decided to do this through a “World at Work” tour. This included an introduction and explanation into our various departments, an overview of each department’s purpose and we discussed the necessary skills and attributes that are required for each role.

As you can imagine the young people were quite surprised to find how varied our work is in a working laboratory. We received great feedback following the tour and the students commented that it opened their eyes to new opportunities they thought were beyond their reach as well as learning more about the food they eat and the water they use. Especially as they had just completed a food hygiene qualification within their course.

The students went on to pass the programme with flying colours. ALcontrol had the pleasure of attending the graduation ceremony at Barnsley Town Hall. As this was the first programme, it was a great honour for ALcontrol to be involved, even having a picture from the tour on the inside page of the programme! This event was attended by many dignitaries from South Yorkshire including the Mayor of Barnsley, the Deputy Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, Chief Fire officer and principle officers from SYFR, along with all the local companies that had helped the students along their journey, and of course their family and friends.

Due to the success of the programme and the positive outcomes, South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue are expanding the course into Rotherham. It was a brilliant way of ALcontrol giving back to the local community and hopefully we can continue to support the course as it grows.
